About Milwaukie Presbyterian Church
Our Mission Statement:
We are an open, loving, and welcoming congregation guided by our faith in Jesus Christ. We seek spiritual growth and a deeper understanding of God’s purpose in our lives through worship, education, and service. At the core of our faith are the qualities of love, peace, charity, and stewardship. We invite everyone to join us in living by these values.
More about who we are:
As a Church in the reformed tradition, we seek answers to the larger theological issues presented by the Bible and our modern culture, such as differences between the various gospels, or the human Jesus versus the divine, or the reconciliation of science and faith, or even the portrayal of God in the Old versus the New Testaments.
We believe there are rational, scholarly, and modern ways to interpret bible teachings to a theologically diverse community. We strive to understand teachings of the Bible in its historical setting, and yet be able to apply those lessons to our lives today. We especially concern ourselves with family, and lessons of stewardship, peace, injustice, suffering, and how we live as Christians.
We seek a deeper understanding of scripture through explanations of the translation from original languages, and how the process of translating the original text may have influenced our understanding of the original message.
Our ultimate goal is the spiritual growth of every member of our congregation. Key components to accomplishing this goal and our mission are:
Worship : two Sunday worship services provide spiritual growth through intellectually vigorous sermons, inspiring music and sense of community within our congregation. Communion is served once a month and special services are held during Easter and Christmas.
Music ministry : under the guidance of our dynamic music director, we have vocal and bell choirs, pipe organ, piano and an instrumental ensemble.
Education : includes classes for all ages between services, summer vacation Bible school, Lenten study groups, guest lecturers, and discussion groups led by strong lay leadership-all coordinated by our excellent Christian Ed director
Youth Ministry : our junior and senior highs meet weekly for study and social activities, participate in monthly street outreach and an annual work caravan with our committed youth director.
Mission : our extensive involvement includes abundant Christmas baskets for local needy families, financial and hands on support for many local and international agencies, and a tutoring program. Also, our building is used by our Boy Scout troop, a Korean congregation, preschool, and various agencies.
Congregational ministry : includes breakfast and prayer groups, all church retreat, special interest and parish groups, very active Deaconate and visiting pastor, parish nurse, Mariners groups, and women’s Bible study/service meetings .
