The pastor shall provide spiritual leadership, pastoral care, administrative oversight, and organizational direction to a diverse congregation having a broad program of worship, music, preaching, teaching, and fellowship as prescribed in the MPC Policy & Procedure Manual.
In summary, the pastor shall be responsible for maintaining an overall vision of MPC and for communicating and nurturing that vision through staff, session and congregation. His or her duties include preaching, administering sacraments, and working with music staff, worship commission, and others to create a well thought-out, cohesive Order of Worship. (S)he will also provide some adult education, and help assure consistency between sermons and children’s lessons. (S)he will teach new member classes as needed, and provide necessary training for church leaders.
As head of staff, (s)he will be the administrator of all staff. While the Personnel Committee is responsible for all personnel matters, the Pastor will lead and coordinate staff members as their supervisor. The pastor will serve as a non-voting, ex officio member of the Personnel Committee.
The pastor will visit the ill, families of the bereaved, and support the Deacons in visiting elderly and homebound. (S)he may provide occasional counseling for members in need.
The pastor will moderate the Session and spiritually motivate commissions and special committees.
Characteristics and qualifications
Our pastor should be open and outgoing, and able to relate well to a congregation that is diverse in age, education, and theological expectations. (S)he must care about people and take a genuine interest in their lives. (S)he should establish a visible presence in the local community to assure a positive public awareness of Milwaukie Presbyterian Church.
Our pastor should be well educated, articulate, and have a proven ability to give inspirational and informative sermons. Content is important to us, so our pastor should be able to tie scripture lessons to our everyday circumstances for adults and children alike.
Our pastor should welcome varying opinions and help facilitate a feeling of congregational unity. The outcome should radiate into a desire to see our church grow spiritually as well as in membership.
Our congregation should feel that MPC is a personal calling for our pastor, and that our church is his or her home, and we are his or her family.
Preaching (Required): Interpreting the biblical text to the contemporary situation; bringing it to bear in the congregation's life and work.
Organizational Leadership and Development (Required): Identifying strengths and weaknesses in an organization's structure, culture, processes, capabilities. Developing a strategic plan to increase effectiveness. Working with staff or volunteers to implement systems that result in improvements in quality, timeliness, or efficiency of operations.
Administrative Leadership (Desired): Overseeing the delivery of planned activities or services. Encouraging and enabling volunteers and/or professional staff to accomplish their duties, achieve their goals, and develop their personal and professional gifts in response to God's call upon their lives. Evaluating the effectiveness of the programs.
Community Service and Leadership (Desired): Leading in civic, interfaith activities related to issues impacting the community and the world.
Congregational Fellowship (Desired): Helping members and groups come together, know one another, have the opportunity to love and support one another, in response to God's call upon their lives.
Corporate Worship / Sacraments (Desired): Ordering worship and the administration of the sacraments in fresh and creative ways consistent with the Reformed Tradition.
Family Ministry (Desired): Providing specialized knowledge of resources and programming that meets the needs of families.
Spiritual Development (Desired): Providing personal spiritual care, resources, guidance, and leadership for persons seeking to deepen their faith in Jesus Christ.
Stewardship and Commitment Program (Desired): Challenging members to develop a lifestyle that demonstrates responsible stewardship and motivating them to work and contribute their resources to the work of the Church.
Young Adult Ministry (Desired): Providing specialized knowledge of resources and programming that meets the needs of young adults.
